For a while now, there have been rumors that Apple is working on OLED display panels for the MacBook series. According to a recent report, it can become a reality much sooner than previously thought.
Reports suggest that the upcoming Apple MacBook Air could be the first MacBook to feature an OLED display panel, and it is anticipated to be released in early 2024.
The MacBook Pro will continue to use mini-LED displays, while the MacBook Air will use OLED displays.
According to a report by 9to5 Mac, the upcoming MacBook Air will reportedly incorporate “tandem stack” OLED technology, a type of OLED technology that enhances display life, power efficiency, and brightness. The MacBook Pro models will continue to use mini-LED screens for the foreseeable future. The use of Mini-LED is a viable alternative to OLED, which is less efficient in certain aspects but more efficient in others.
OLED displays are often favored over mini-LEDs due to their superior black levels. The reason for this is that the pixels themselves generate the light and if the pixels need to be black, they can be completely turned off.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst at Apple, proposed that the company would introduce OLED MacBook models before the end of 2024. Some reports also suggests that Apple is working on new 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models that will be powered by the unannounced Apple M3 chipset.
Although the company has not made any official announcements, it is anticipated that the new devices will be unveiled in June at the 2024 Worldwide Developers Conference.
